How to Choose a Backpack Rain Cover
A backpack rain cover is a practical accessory for hiking, trekking and travelling in unpredictable weather. It covers the outside of your backpack and helps protect the fabric, zips and pockets from direct exposure to rain.
The most important factors when choosing are your backpack's capacity and actual dimensions. The cover should adequately protect the front and sides of the backpack while fitting securely enough to prevent it from slipping or flapping excessively as you walk.
Pinguin Raincover Sizes S, M, L and XL
Pinguin Raincover models are available in four sizes for small daypacks, larger hiking backpacks and expedition packs.
- Pinguin Raincover S: for backpacks with a capacity of 15 to 35 litres. Suitable for smaller hiking backpacks and daypacks.
- Pinguin Raincover M: for backpacks with a capacity of 35 to 55 litres. Ideal for weekend trips and medium-sized trekking backpacks.
- Pinguin Raincover L: for backpacks with a capacity of 55 to 75 litres. Suitable for larger hiking backpacks on multi-day adventures.
- Pinguin Raincover XL: for large backpacks with a capacity of 75 to 100 litres, including packs used for longer treks and expeditions.
If your backpack falls between two sizes, consider its actual shape, height and any equipment attached externally. For example, a 35-litre backpack doesn't automatically require the larger cover. The key is whether the cover adequately protects the backpack and can be secured correctly.
Waterproof Fabric and Rain Protection
Pinguin Raincover models are made from polyester fabric with a PU coating and a 1,500 mm hydrostatic head. Their seamless construction helps minimise potential points of water entry.
A rain cover mainly protects the front and sides of your backpack. The back panel remains uncovered to accommodate the carrying system, shoulder straps and contact with your back. A rain cover therefore doesn't make the entire backpack completely waterproof.
During prolonged rain, we recommend packing sleeping bags, spare clothing, electronics and other moisture-sensitive equipment in separate waterproof dry bags or liners inside your backpack.
Secure Attachment and Reflective Details
The rain cover fits around the backpack using an elasticated edge with an adjustable cord lock, allowing it to adapt to different backpack sizes and shapes. An additional elastic securing strap behind the hip belt helps prevent the cover from slipping during movement or in stronger winds.
Large reflective detailing helps improve visibility in low-light conditions. However, a backpack rain cover doesn't replace a high-visibility vest or other dedicated safety equipment.
Each rain cover includes a compact storage pouch, so you can keep it in a backpack pocket and take it out whenever the weather changes.
Does Every Backpack Include a Rain Cover?
Many Pinguin hiking backpacks come with a rain cover as standard, but this isn't the case for every model. Before purchasing, we recommend checking the contents listed in the individual backpack's product description.
If your backpack doesn't include a rain cover, or you need to replace a damaged one, you can purchase a universal Pinguin Raincover in a suitable size. The cover doesn't need to have the same model name as your backpack. What matters most is choosing the correct size and securing it properly.
How to Use and Care for a Backpack Rain Cover
We recommend fitting your rain cover before heavy rain begins. Before setting off, check that it covers the exposed outer sections of your backpack, the elastic edge is adjusted correctly and the additional securing strap is fastened.
- Before use: check that the cover is the correct size and securely attached.
- During your trip: make sure the cover doesn't obstruct access to important backpack components or interfere with the carrying straps.
- After rain: allow the cover to dry before storing it for an extended period.
- Cleaning: gently remove dirt with a damp cloth or sponge. Avoid aggressive cleaning products.
Rain Covers as Part of Your Hiking Equipment
A rain cover is a simple way to improve your backpack's protection in wet weather. For more reliable protection of sensitive equipment, we recommend combining it with waterproof dry bags or liners inside the backpack.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is my backpack completely waterproof with a rain cover?
A rain cover mainly protects your backpack from rain falling on the top and sides. The backpacks themselves are not waterproof. For prolonged rain, we recommend packing your belongings inside the backpack in separate waterproof dry bags.
My backpack didn't come with a rain cover. Can I buy one separately?
Yes. If your backpack doesn't include a rain cover, you can purchase a universal rain cover in a size suitable for your backpack's capacity. The individual backpack product description states whether a rain cover is included.
Do you sell replacement rain covers for specific backpack models?
We don't offer model-specific replacement rain covers. Instead, you can use a universal rain cover in a size suitable for your backpack's capacity.
