How to choose a winter sleeping bag
For a winter sleeping bag, sufficient thermal insulation is essential. When choosing, pay particular attention to the Comfort temperature, which is the best indication of the temperature at which the sleeping bag should provide a comfortable night's sleep without feeling cold.
The Limit temperature represents the lower limit of use for less cold-sensitive users. The Extreme temperature is only an emergency survival rating and should not be used as the main criterion when choosing a sleeping bag for winter conditions.
In cold weather, it is also advisable to allow for a certain thermal reserve. Your comfort is affected not only by the sleeping bag itself, but also by altitude, wind, humidity, fatigue, clothing, the way you sleep and the sleeping mat you use.
Down or synthetic winter sleeping bag?
Down winter sleeping bags offer an excellent balance of thermal insulation, low weight and compact packed size. They are therefore especially suitable for winter hiking and mountain trips where keeping your gear light and compact is important.
Synthetic winter sleeping bags are generally less sensitive to moisture and are a practical choice when minimum weight and packed size are not the main priorities.
Why are winter sleeping bags mummy-shaped?
Winter sleeping bags usually have a mummy shape, which follows the contours of the body more closely and reduces the amount of empty space inside the bag. This means your body has less air to warm up, helping to reduce heat loss.
The narrower foot area and close-fitting section around the head also help retain warmth. At the same time, the mummy shape contributes to a good balance of thermal comfort, low weight and compact packability.
A sleeping mat is just as important in winter
When sleeping in winter, the sleeping bag is only part of the insulation system. A significant amount of heat can be lost to the cold ground, so choosing the right sleeping mat is equally important.
Its insulation performance is expressed by the R-value – the higher the value, the better the mat insulates from the ground. The sleeping bag and sleeping mat should therefore be considered as one sleep system and selected according to the expected temperatures and conditions.
Connecting two sleeping bags
Some models are available with both right-hand and left-hand zips. Compatible sleeping bags with zips on opposite sides can be connected to create a shared sleeping space for two people. If you want to use this option, check the zip orientation and compatibility of the specific models.
