Product detailed description
Pinguin Magma 900
A warm down sleeping bag for winter conditions, combining high insulation performance with good packability. Magma 900 is designed for winter hiking, sleeping in freezing temperatures and other situations where a generous thermal reserve is essential. It is available in three lengths for users up to 175, 185 and 195 cm tall.
700 cuin and up to 965 g of down insulation
Insulation is provided by 90/10 duck down with a fill power of 700 cuin. The amount of down varies according to the sleeping bag length:
- 175 cm: 825 g of down
- 185 cm: 900 g of down
- 195 cm: 965 g of down
Cuin indicates the fill power of down, meaning the volume the down can achieve when fully lofted. The higher the value, the better the potential insulation-to-weight ratio. However, fill power alone does not determine how warm a sleeping bag is. Thermal performance also depends on the amount of down, chamber construction, shape and the overall design of the sleeping bag.
Trapezoidal chambers for winter use
The down insulation is distributed in trapezoidal chambers. Internal baffles separate the individual sections of down, helping to keep the insulation evenly distributed and reducing migration and clumping.
Unlike a simple sewn-through construction, the chamber design also avoids a direct connection between the inner and outer fabrics through which heat could escape more easily. This helps make effective use of the down insulation and reduces the formation of cold spots.
Thermal comfort for freezing conditions
Magma 900 has the following temperature ratings:
- Comfort: -7 °C
- Limit: -14 °C
- Extreme: -35 °C
For choosing a sleeping bag for regular use, the Comfort rating is the most useful value to consider. Limit represents a lower temperature threshold for a less cold-sensitive sleeper. Extreme is an emergency rating and should not be regarded as a recommended temperature for normal sleeping.
Three lengths for the right body height
Magma 900 is available in three sizes. The 175 / 185 / 195 cm designation indicates the recommended maximum user height.
For example, if you are 182 cm tall, choose the 185 cm version. A slightly longer sleeping bag is not a problem and can provide a little extra space. On the other hand, we do not recommend choosing a sleeping bag that is shorter than your body height. Stretching the sleeping bag with your body can compress the insulation around the feet or hood and reduce thermal comfort.
The simple rule is: choose the nearest sleeping bag length that is equal to or greater than your body height.
- 175 cm: 1455 g
- 185 cm: 1580 g
- 195 cm: 1690 g
As the sleeping bag gets longer, both its total weight and the amount of down insulation increase to maintain suitable insulation throughout its full length.
The mummy shape reduces unnecessary internal space and helps the insulation work efficiently in cold conditions.
Packability and compression sack
Magma 900 comes with a compression sack that allows the packed volume of the sleeping bag to be significantly reduced for transport.
- Ø 23 × 37 cm – size of the sleeping bag packed in the compression sack before tightening the straps
- Ø 23 × 28 cm – size after fully tightening the compression straps
Compression can therefore reduce the packed length by approximately 9 cm while the diameter remains roughly the same.
Expert tip: To compress the sleeping bag as much as possible, first use your body weight to gradually press it down in the sack, for example by carefully applying pressure with your knee. Then tighten the compression straps gradually, working around the sack. Do not tighten one strap fully at once. Go around the sack several times and tighten each strap a little further on every pass. This helps compress the sleeping bag more evenly and makes it easier to achieve a smaller packed size.
The minimum achievable size also depends on the amount of force and body weight you can apply. A lighter person may not be able to compress the sleeping bag quite as much as a heavier user. The Ø 23 × 28 cm figure should therefore be understood as a size achievable with thorough compression and full tightening of the compression sack.
Zips and connecting two sleeping bags
Magma 900 is equipped with high-quality YKK zips and is available with either a right-hand or left-hand zip.
A right-hand and left-hand version can be connected together, allowing two compatible sleeping bags to create a shared sleeping space.
New Magma 900 vs. previous Magma 1000
Magma 900 represents the newer generation of the Magma winter down sleeping bag, while the previous Magma 1000 remains part of our range.
One of the main changes in the new Magma 900 is the use of down with a higher fill power of 700 cuin. Higher fill power means that the down can loft to a greater volume at the same weight, helping to achieve a very good balance between insulation, weight and packability.
The previous Magma 1000 uses a larger amount of down insulation and was designed as a very warm winter sleeping bag for demanding freezing conditions. The new Magma 900 uses higher-fill-power down and represents the updated generation of the same product line.
When choosing between the two models, do not interpret the numbers 900 and 1000 simply as an indication of which sleeping bag is “warmer”. The number refers to the amount of down used in the 185 cm version, while actual thermal performance is also influenced by fill power, chamber construction and the overall design of the sleeping bag.
